Jin Dong Du is a principal geotechnical engineer licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario, with more than 33 years of international experience in open-pit mining, geotechnical risk management and civil engineering. He most recently led geotechnical risk management and supervised the geotechnical team at New Gold’s Rainy River open-pit mine, including management of a 275 m high in-pit waste rock dump.
Previously with WSP Golder, SNC-Lavalin and De Beers Canada (Victor mine), he completed slope design studies at the prefeasibility, feasibility, operating and closure stages in Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Kazakhstan, Russia and Saudi Arabia, along with crown pillar assessments, portal designs and tailings dam safety inspections.
The author of eight technical publications, including work on the probability of failure of rock slopes and rockfall analysis, he contributed to two methodologies recognized under Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program in 2020 and received New Gold’s Geotechnical Hazard Mitigation Award in 2025.
